At the core of our kid’s English curriculum at ALEX英会話 is Jolly Phonics. We start teaching Jolly Phonics to students at 3 or 4 years old and continue through elementary school. Within the first year, students learn to read small books and write simple sentences, an in later years are able to read more and start learning more spelling and grammar rules. In class, you will see our teachers teaching letter sounds, gestures, and writing in workbooks to help children learn the letters and sounds of English. But what is Jolly Phonics?
Jolly Phonics (ジョリーフォニックス) は英語の読む・書く・聞く・話すを、更には語彙力を習得するための完全な基礎教材です。Jolly Phonicsでは、楽しくそして多感覚的であるという観点から、文字の音の指導方法としてsynthetic phonics (シンセティック・フォニック
ス) 法を採用しています。子どもたちは、言葉を 読んだり書いたりするためにどのように文字の音を使ったらよいのかを学んでいきます。
Jolly Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading, writing, speaking, listening and building vocabulary. It uses the synthetic phonics method of teaching the letter sounds in a way that is fun and multi-sensory. Children learn how to use the letter sounds to read and write words.
Jolly Phonicsでは、26個のアルファベットのみでなく、英語の主要な42個の音を学習します。これらの音は7つのグループに分けられます。それぞれの音ごとに子どもたちがその文字を覚えやすいような固有のアクション (動作) が設定 されています。その中のいくつかはeeやorのように二つの文字で表記されており、それらはdigraph (ダイグラフ) と呼ばれています。ダイグラフの中には、一つの表記で二種類の音を表わすものもあります。例えば、bookやmoonの中のooや、thatやthreeの中の thがそれにあたります。こういった二種類の音を区別するために、ダイグラフは二種類の書体で表記されています。
In Jolly Phonics the 42 main sounds of English are taught, not just the alphabet. The sounds are in seven groups. Each sound has an action which helps children remember the letter(s) that represent it. Some sounds are written with two letters, such as ee and or. These are called digraphs. oo and th can each make two different sounds, as in book and moon, that and three. To distinguish between these two sounds, the digraph is represented in two forms. This is shown below.

子どもたちはそれぞれの文字の正しい筆順を学びます。英単語の中には、saidやwas、oneのように、ブレンディングによって読むことができない不規則な単語があります。しかも残念なことに、こうした多くの単語は使用頻度が高いものなのです。こうした不規則な 単語は暗記するしかなく、“tricky words” (ひっかけ単語) と呼ばれています。Jolly Phonicsではsaid、was、theのような不規則単語 または “tricky words”(ひっかけ単 語)も併せて学習するようになっています。
A child will also learn to form each letter the correct way. Additionally, some words in English have an irregular spelling and cannot be read by blending, such as said, was and one. Unfortunately, many of these are common words. The irregular parts have to be remembered. These are called the ‘tricky words’.
